My First Give Away

After being a teacher and a consultant for over twenty years, I produced my first original “How To” give away.  It took hours of editing to produce.   If you are interested in being on my email list, and getting free PDF articles from time to time, you can email me at tchistorygal@gmail.com.

The article is “Ten Tips for Editing Before Your Editor Reads Your Novel.”  Editing takes me three times as long as writing!  WOW!

  1. I think editing should always take longer than writing. I write in a sort of ‘stream of consciousness’ style. Then I go back several times and take out the unnecessary verbiage (usually quite a lot). I’m not talking blogging here but things I think I might want to keep and might be read by others over time. Then I check for fluency and coherence. Very often I have bits that sit better elsewhere in the piece. It takes serious thought and concentration. Good for you for helping others with your How To sheets.

  2. Good for you! Just back from a writing conference where some writers referred to the first draft as “barfing on the page.” After that, it’s all “clean-up,” otherwise known as rewriting/editing.

Oh, and I just reviewed The Goldfinch. Now that book really needed an editor!

  3. This is so great! I’m an editor/graphic designer/illustrator! I love that you have written an article about editing before your editor gets ahold of your manuscript. It’s so so true. Because sometimes what you think is interesting and righteous might get cut on the editing rounds. How many rounds of edits do you typically see before you go to print?

    1. This is my first book. I did five rounds, and it took nearly three months working daily for many hours a day. I’d love to send you my article, and get your opinion, and endorsement, if you like it! 🙂

      1. Oh wow! I would love to read it. I usually don’t endorse anything because I work for a publishing company but personally I can give you my opinion. Wow 5 rounds that sure is a lot of patience. A novel is a huge undertaking. You know I was first attracted to WordPress because of the name. Once I got to blogging I have met so many interesting people such as yourself I’m amazed at the talent! I love that you’ve been writing most of your life! 🙂

      2. Marsha I thought I better clarify what I shared. I work for a magazine publishing company which publishes, trade and industry related magazines, books, shows and such. Like Oil & Gas, Water, Fire, Power, and Electric. We really don’t publish books or anything unless they are trade related. I probably wouldn’t be a good endorsement. I hope I didn’t word that incorrectly.
