I searched all my posts for something on relaxing, and came up with 9 posts out of almost 400.  So much for reposting something!  Vince is relaxing today playing poker, his favorite boy hobby besides cars.  I’m blogging.  It’s beautiful out, and I’m blogging.

Last night for an hour I video chatted with Leanne Cole, a blogging friend/photographer.  I highly recommend a private tutoring session with Leanne.  Practice without instruction means I make the same mistakes over and over.

Before I even started the call I had to prepare.

  1. Donated to Leanne’s site because she lives by her photography, and gives a lot of free advice – determined by me as to the worth of the advice I expected to receive.  I think a professional minimum should be at least $50 an hour, but that is pretty cheap.  I can’t get someone to look at my refrigerator for $50.  She never told me what to donate!
  2. Emailed Leanne my goals for the call.
  3. Picked my BEST pictures, resized them to 600 X 400 pixels so I could email 16 of them in one email.
  4. Picked some troublesome problems that recur in photos that I wish could look like Leanne’s pictures.

Here’s how to get ready for a video tutoring session.

  1. Wear a baseball cap all day because you didn’t wash your hair.
  2. Don’t video chat before 9:00 p.m. after your make-up has relaxed a bit.
  3. Get your pet (s) out of hiding.  They love to appear on the call.  Leanne wore her cat around her neck! Vince wore Puppy Girl in his lap.

Here’s one photo we talked about.

Leanne’s advice:

  1. Better if light is the same on the face.  Flecks of sunlight on someone’s face – poor
  2. Watch feet in the background.
  3. Bright sun is a killer in photos.  Your eyes go to the brightest part of an image.
  4. Shoot at same eye level as kids.

Possible solutions – some of which I need to practice.  Leanne actually did these things to the photo so I coud see how to do them and what a difference it made.

  1. Crop the picture, but only if you can do it without ending up with a square picture.
  2. Select the light parts-highlights and darken them, and the shadows and lighten them.  There are several ways to do this, and she used “raw photo”.  Pronounced in American as “roll” photo.  I was racking my brain to figure out what a roll photo was.  This is the first time we had heard each other.  That was really fun!  🙂

Cropping went well.  I used the magic wand to delete the feet in PS 6, and you can see what I got.  I went to Bridge, figured out how to open “roll”, and  did a little adjusting, but I wasn’t pleased with it.  Then I tried to save it, and move on, The save button blinks, and nothing is happening (as in it is still doing it).  Since I’m relaxing today, I’ll publish this post instead of getting frustrated in Bridge and PS6, Adobe products that I love – GRRR.

Take home advice for the night – think before you shoot.  Composition, composition, composition!

  1. I’m afraid those shadows on the boy’s face made him look rather weird. Why didn’t I think of the baseball cap solution ? 😀

    1. His grandmother said, “Not his best picture.” I actually loved it anyway because his attitude was so funny. “I don’t want much to do with you and that camera. Get out of my way, I’ve got a tractor ride to get to!!!” So funny! Usually, but I don’t always have a way with kids. 🙂

  2. Sounds like you got some excellent advice. I’m not a fan, either, of people’s feet or some part of the photographer ending up in the photo, either, unless it’s there by design.

    1. The feet I removed weren’t my feet, but they were at the edge of the photo. I don’t know about you, but sometimes when I’m shooting a picture I look at the focal point, and I don’t check around the edges, and I can barely see anyway. That’s what Leanne told me to do in the future. I’m going to have to exercise my peripheral vision!!

  3. Marsha, huge fan of Leanne too – have been her world for quite a while now – and she are such a fantastic person and outstanding photographer.
The only thing …. be a good team player with the camera is to take photos and more photos … put it against everything – I’m only a happy amateur – but I use my camera every day … and in the end it will sink in. There is also programs, free that you can cover over details that shouldn’t be there (cloning) – Photoscape – free download … and do the same things like the expensive programs.
The face I think will be very difficult to fix … you can lighten it a bit maybe.

    1. I gave up on it yesterday. I may practice with it today. Yes, Leanne is lots of fun to skype with . I felt self-conscious but she was laughing and looked just as pixilated as me, though her hair looked better! She was all bundled up because it’s winter there. I was wearing shorts and a sleeveless shirt. We had a chance to share about different customs, too. For example, it is illegal to have your cat out all night because they kill endangered birds. Our cats here are outdoor 24/7.

      1. Marsha, what would we do without SKYPE *smile – do you know that SKYPE is an Swedish invent??? http://wp.me/p293Pw-5Og – did a post about one of the guys behind during the A-Z.
I have never heard that cats take should take more birds at night than during the day before, at night the birds sleeps and not on the ground … we have a law against that cats are not allowed to have bell on their necklace, because it can make the cats mentally disturbed.

        1. Seriously? I never knew that. My neighbor had a bell on her cat for years. I’ll go read your article now. Thanks for sharing with me. 🙂

    2. I think Leanne is brilliant. You are so right about making sure any donation is fair. Knowledge sharing / teaching is making a living, paying the bills. She is a very good communicator. I’m a fan, as they say in the Mandarin Oriental ads.

  4. You’re so patient to continue to work with pictures that have problems with them. I will work with them to some degree, but if there are too many problems, I just delete. I figure I can’t fix every picture. I think you’re right that composition from the beginning is everything. 🙂

    1. Actually I took some of my BEST pictures to Leanne for advice. I wanted to find out what it would take to go from good to great – or at least better. When I look at professional pictures, I can tell they are professionals, but I just can’t pick out what’s different. She pointed out things that I would not have thought of, like light in the background drawing the attention away from the main attraction. I never gave that a clue! 🙂

  5. I was drawn to the face of the boy because of the bright light in the middle of his face. It seemed to distort his face & make the pic look less attractive. I didn’t even notice the feet in the pic until you pointed it out, but the pic would have been without them.

    1. I didn’t either, that was part of the problem! I DON’T notice! 🙂

  6. The shadows on his face don’t fall evenly. It’s kind of distracting.

    1. That was Leanne’s comment. I tried to fix it, and I know there’s a way, but I’m not remembering how just yet. My notes tell me, but it didn’t turn out right, and I couldn’t save it. Oh well. I’m still learning! 🙂
