Planting Strawberries

Rows and rows of strawberries.
Rows and rows of strawberries.

Last year a friend of mine gave me  81 strawberry plants. Fortunately, I have a big yard. I planted all 81 plants. Most of them lived. Some of them had babies. This year I had to transplant babies.

How many babies can you count?
How many babies can you count?

It’s hard to know how many holes to dig until you start digging up the babies. What looks like one big plant may end up being five little plants. Five little plants may end up being 10 little plants. Yesterday, most of the day I spent digging up weeds, and preparing the soil. By the time I finished I had to take off my coat, and I had a big pile of weeds. But I didn’t have many strawberry plants.

Weeds and grass grew where the strawberries didn't make it!

Today, I dug up babies. I planted about 30 babies. Many of them only had two or three leaves. But I gave them a spot, and hopefully they will grow.

You know why strawberries are always so good? They live in holy places.

What is your favorite plant to grow?

By the way I am using Dragon Naturally to do this post. I still have a lot to learn. Especially about editing, but it does type faster than I do. It just can’t think for me!

I decided on my anniversary of one year with WordPress that I would start another blog on blogger. My other address is I want to write an article to compare the different kinds of website builders. On blogspot I’m just going to have pictures with a little bit of explanation. Nothing complicated! 🙂

  1. My favorite plants to grow are the ones that don’t require any effort from me. I’m a horrible brown thumber when it comes to gardening. So this dragon naturally is it a dictation app? I could never dictate because the sound of my voice throws off my thoughts. I suppose I could learn; when I first started in the newspaper business, I couldn’t compose a sentence on the computer. I had to write everything out longhand and then type it in.
Now I can only compose on the computer.
    Good luck with your strawbabies.

  2. I was only thinking yesterday about trying my hand at strawberry planting… Your ‘success’ is spurring me on..! 😉
We have just bought our home; there were no plants whatsoever in what is quite a sizable area. Now we have a wonderful Tibouchina with blossoms plus a few shrubs, and a few young trees all growing very nicely… I am so looking forward to planting more..! Gardening is so enjoyable, Marcia… Oh yes, we want to start a vegie garden too… Love eating fresh vegies. At the moment one of our neighbours is growing beans. Those that hang over the back fence are soon in my cooking pot. I love my neighbour… 🙂

    1. Sounds like you have the perfect neighbors! Ours are wonderful as well. They bring us lots of vegetables and fruits in the summer as well. This time we will have something to share with them. That’s always nice! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂 Marsha 🙂

  3. you’re inspiring me to plant strawberries. I’m a gardening newbie, but I’m looking to build on last year’s tomato success. I love watching plants grow. I think it’s a fabulous miracle. Last year, when the tomatoes started budding from the flower, I was dancing around like a lunatic. I was just glad I didn’t kill it. 🙂

    1. Hi lady,

I’m not crazy about getting in the mud either. Except for strawberries, I probably wouldn’t garden. Okay, maybe for tomatoes, too. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂 M 🙂

        1. NO! I just bought Vince a restaurant style waffle maker. It is awesome! We had waffles for breakfast this morning. It was so easy because I had made the batter a few days ago, and saved it. I ran out of strawberries, so I used blackberries. Yum! When is your next break? It should be just about right for waffles and strawberries and whipped cream! My mouth is watering already anticipating seeing you and Glenn across the table from us eating fresh-picked strawberries! 🙂

    1. Hahaha – not about the bunnies, but you must have been reading my post at the exact time I was reading yours! What a great post, Kathy! I did a rant article on my blouse experience it was so bizarre. I chose not to go behind the screen, and I’m kind of glad I did. Everyone could see this woman with her blue gloves groping me – over and over again. Now that I’m old, I thought it was funny, but as a teen, I would have been totally mortified. The poor TSA officer had absolutely NO sense of humor. That ought to be a requirement. OK, your article was way more controversial than planting strawberries. But mine will taste better!!! hahaha

        1. I have Dragon trained on several computers for my normal voice, my I-have-a-cold-and-sore-throat voice, and my margarita voice. It understands my Texas drawl but when I hang lots of the same vowels together, it still has trouble.

          1. I think D and I need to spend more time in vocal training. I won’t give up, though! I do hesitate to do it when Vince is around! I feel a little weird! 🙂
