V thinks Manny should have his own site.  I don’t know.  I tried to get him his own email, but Google didn’t want to give it to him for two reasons.  1)  He was underage, and 2) He didn’t look human.  go figure

So I lied about his age, and got one anyway, but I couldn’t complete his profile because he still didn’t look human.  So he wanted to clean up a bit and look a little more human. He saw Ute’s teddies having a bath, and that gave him courage.   His bath was a riot, and I thought you might agree.

The instructions for Manny’s bath were as follows: Mild suds, cold water, air dry, brush gently.  Manny didn’t want cold water, so he got a nice warm bath.  It’s still cool here.  He also hasn’t allowed me to brush him,  Gently or otherwise.  Kalev hid out all during Manny’s bath.

Manny was made by Gund Toy Manufacturers in Edison, New Jersey, but you can buy Manny at Amazon.

“The leading soft toy manufacturer in the U.S., and also the oldest, GUND was founded by German immigrant Adolph Gund in Norwalk, Connecticut in 1898. GUND was one of the first companies to design and produce teddy bears in the early 1900s.”  Since Tulare County is the size of Connecticut, Manny is glad he came to live here.

Developed apparently simultaneously by toymakers Morris Michtom in the US and Richard Steiff in Germany in the early years of the 20th century, and named after Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt, (who wouldn’t shoot the bear cub after a hunt during which time it had been mistreated), the teddy bear became an iconic children’s toy…

“Teddies” have greatly varied in form, style and material. They have become collector’s items, with older and rarer “teddies” appearing at public auctions.[2] Teddy bears are among the most popular gifts for children and are often given to adults to signify love, congratulations or sympathy.”  Wikipedia

Manny was a Valentine’s gift several years ago after V had given me families and families of bears.  Somehow Manny rose to the top of the heap.  He has made both of us laugh when laughing wasn’t the highest priority on our list.   If we had had a fight, and I had gone to bed angry, often V would come in with Manny and put him in my face and make Manny talk, or turn his head.  I couldn’t stay mad with Manny all over me.  It worked just as well with V when he was mad.

I had heard that teddy bears were often used in therapy for young children, but they are also used with adults as well.  The year I got Manny my boss told me that she had a bear, and it went everywhere.  I figured if Dr. Baake and her husband could take a bear with them to places, so could I.  I took Manny to the next retreat that consultants and administrators from all over California County Offices attend each year.  One of the other consultants in our office brought the doll her husband had given her for Valentine’s day as well.  Manny has been going places with us ever since.

V told me again today, Manny needs his own blog.  I guess we will have to travel more and take him places – like Justin Beaver, Eternal Traveler’s travel partner.  Or fight!

What have teddy bears done for you?  Do you have a favorite one?

Here are some articles about teddy bears used in therapy.

  1. Manny is such a cutie. Now – even more-so that he’s taken a bath!
I have a few teddy bears at my house that I’ve collected throughout the years. They are kinda’ hidden though. They want no part of Fenway thinking of them as chew toys.

    1. Yes, he does! Did you see his new blog? http://wp.me/p4dK5n-a He posted the same pictures there, but different cations, and it’s much shorter. He is so excited. He’s only had one view so far, though! 🙂

    1. Awww I just finished reading Susan and the Windy City. That was your best thriller yet. Now I can’t wait for the next one. I did go back and order the Sin City one that I had forgotten. Now I’m hooked. 🙂 You are a fun, fun writer! 🙂 I’m constantly wondering how many antics are your personal ones, Maddie!!!! 🙂

      1. Marsha, could you be any sweeter! I’m so tickled you’ve enjoyed the books. I think my writing is definitely getting better as I go along. I started out such a greenhorn without a clue. It’s been a real learning process – learning by making mistakes all along the way. 😉

I’ve been so busy the past few days, and have been wanting to write back to you, but I’ll just tell you now that I got such a kick out of your escapades when you were younger. I love that you were fearless! It was a different time then, wasn’t it? When hanging with strangers was exciting and not frightening. We certainly do have some great memories!

          3. I didn’t have a clue about writing. That’s why this has all been such a comedy of errors for this past year. I’m determined though. Little by little I learn, and I hope to do better in the future.

          4. Amazing! You have done a great job. I love the way you wove your experiences into a story. My problem is coming up with an adequately interesting crime, since I’m not really very observant on my own, and then weave in the silly things that have happened to me. You were masterful about it. But you give me hope! How did you find your artist, or did you do it yourself? Susan is adorable! 🙂

          5. Marsha, just start with an idea and write! The mystery will show up. I’m flabbergasted at how my characters and my story go off in all sorts of directions I never intended. When I was scribbling a first chapter for the two sisters, I had no idea there was a body in that construction site until my main character flew off a dirt mound on a bike, crashed, and bounced her butt of it. Where did that body come from? I have to keep writing to find out. The mind works in such funny ways. 🙂

My cover art is done by my niece. She came up with Susan’s look, and I love it!

          6. It is totally adorable. Who could resist that look! The more I think about your characters, the more I think there is a lot of psychology going on underneath them – male/female relationships of various sorts, and getting comfortable with all kinds of different relationships – exploring them really. The relationship between Susan and Darby is particularly deep and interesting, even more so really than her relationship with her husband. 🙂

          7. Ooh, yes! I definitely went deeper with the Susan/Darby relationship than with Mick. Everyone wants a friend like Darby! Some of us were lucky enough to have one. I suspect you were, too. 😉

    1. Manny refused to come with me on my last trip. He was on the phone, who knows with whom, probably one of your teddies. So when I left, he just sat there, on the desk, phone at his ear. Didn’t even kiss me goodbye. Go figure. 🙂 ML

  12. An interesting text about the teddy bear as an iconic children’s toy. I like it very much, Marsha, and your sense of humor as well. When I was 6 years old I had a teddy bear taller than me. I was ill and this friend made me happy. It was hard disease! I do not know what happened to my “MiÅ›”. Probably “MiÅ›” is living in the world of unused things in Mary Poppins’s realm.

    1. What a sweet story, Wanda. Teddy bears are SO comforting. My grandparents gave me on when I was about that age. It had a hard plastic nose. I was so disappointed in it. I couldn’t cuddle without being hit by the nose! 🙂 Marsha 🙂
